Chronicle (2012)

the GOOD

Director: Josh Trank

“Oh wow, look! A nerd with a camera!”
Chronicle got a lot of positive reviews in the past few months and all the hype just made me all the more wary. It’s not a bad film at all, it just could’ve been a lot better and i don’t really see it as original as other people like it to be. It’s actually filled with stereotypes, there are no surprises at all about how the story ends and the fact that the film has been toned down to get an PG13 rating makes matters worse.
I absolutely hated that this is done in “found footage” style.
Thankfully it isn’t all shacky and fuzzy, but they made it even worse cause the picture quality never changes throughout the whole film, no matter what source the footage is from, be it iphone, digitalvideo or HD Cam. Needless to say, there’s also some scenes that don’t make a lot of sense because no one records all the daily (and often terrible) stuff that happens.
There’s also no explanation on the super powers or the origin of their source at all.
However, Chronicle is often very entertaining despite the flaws and has some very good scenes too, it’s just a bit too predictable.
